BIRD by Laura Lomas

In association with Derby Theatre.  Touring to Hackney Showroom, Live Theatre Newcastle, Birmingham Rep, Nottingham Playhouse, Bolton Octagon (Following a pilot tour in 2013 at Derby Playhouse, Nottingham Contemporary and the National Theatre Studio.)

It’s 4 in the morning and Leah Bird is alone in a flat in Derby waiting for her boyfriend to call. Over the course of a single night she tells us what it’s like to be fourteen, fearless and full of love. But everything isn’t what it seems, and as the sun comes up, Leah begins to unpick the true nature of her relationship with Ali.

I feel my heart beating like birds wings flapping

and then he’s asking

‘Hey, what’s your name?’

And he look at me, right into me, and so I tell him.

‘My name’s Leah, Leah Bird.’

‘Bird’ he say.

And he smile at me,

He smiles at me.

He smile

At me.

“Director Jane Fallowfield colours Lomas’ beautifully crafted monologue with rich theatrical texture…Jo Scotcher’s wonderful design walks a fine line between realism and abstraction…A compelling examination of child exploitation in a sophisticated production that gives a victim’s voice the wings to fly” (4 stars, The Stage)

“Director Jane Fallowfield sets the mood of an encroaching nightmare…Bird is a refreshing attempt to understand rather than condemn a victim and a powerful and moving play.” (4 stars, What’s on Stage)
